How to prepare for a job interview and make an impression that lasts

October 22, 20263 min read

An interview invitation means your CV did its job and caught a recruiter's attention. The interview is where the decision gets made. In a Syrian job market full of capable people, being good at the work is not enough. You also need to show it well.

Whether your next interview is face to face at the company's office or online, these steps will improve your chances.

1. Research the company properly

Many candidates walk into an interview knowing almost nothing about the company. Before the day:

  • Look at the company's website and its social media accounts, such as LinkedIn and Facebook.
  • Understand what they sell or what services they offer, and who their main competitors are, locally and in the region.
  • Try to get a sense of the company culture, so you can show in the conversation how you would fit into the team.

2. Take the job description apart and match it to your work

Every job on SyrianJobs has its own requirements. Read the job description carefully:

  • Pick out the keywords and the main tasks.
  • Prepare real examples from your past jobs that show you have done these tasks well. Instead of saying "I am very organized", say "In my last job I reorganized the company's digital archive, which cut the time spent looking for files by 40%."

3. Practice the common questions with the STAR method

The same questions come up in most interviews, and how you answer them is what counts.

  • "Tell me about yourself." Sum up your career in two minutes, focus on the experience closest to this job, and end with why this particular opening interests you.
  • Behavioral questions, such as "Tell me about a time you had a problem with a colleague and how you solved it." Here the STAR method helps:
    • Situation: briefly explain what was going on.
    • Task: what you needed to do.
    • Action: the steps you took yourself.
    • Result: what came out of it in the end.

4. Get the practical side right

Interviews in Syria need some extra preparation so nothing catches you out:

  • For an interview in person, plan your route, leave early because of traffic and transport, and aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the time.
  • For an interview online, power cuts and weak connections are the risk. Charge your laptop and phone fully, test a backup connection such as mobile data, and settle in a quiet, well-lit spot at least half an hour before the call.

5. Prepare good questions for the interviewer

At the end you will hear the usual "Do you have any questions for us?". Saying "no" makes you look uninterested. Use the moment instead:

  • "What are the biggest challenges the team is facing right now?"
  • "What does a normal working day look like, and how will you measure success in the first three months?"

In short

Preparation is what gives you confidence and takes the nerves away. An interview is a conversation in both directions to see whether you and the company fit, not an interrogation. Prepare well and trust what you can do. For more career guides and new jobs, check the articles on SyrianJobs regularly.
